1) Pizza Hut is, apparently by most Japanese people, thought to be "Pizza Hat." This is namely a result of "hat" and "hut" being pronounced identically when turned into Katakana (the Japanese syllabary for foreign words). This is also compounded by Pizza Hut's hut-logo looking very much like a hat. 2) Baskin Robins is not known as Baskin Robins but instead, the "31 Ice Cream Store." With Starbucks becoming "Sutabakusu" (or "Sutaba") you'd have thought Baskin would have morphed into "Basukin" or "BasuRo" or something. But no, it's "thaati wan aisu kuremu sutoa," which is, I have to admit, sort of cute. With that, I'm off to meditate under a waterfall in the mountains for a couple days. |
CommentsActually, technically I think it was Tomomi who was all about the Pizza Hat thing. But since you were, technically, in the same room. I'll give you some technical credit for technicalities too. Craig Whoa there, technician. It was I who asked Tomomi what she thought hatto meant, knowing full well that she would say "hat" and not "hut." Now give me the glory I deserve. David It sure is sunny on this fine morning. I'm off for some Zoka coffee which, might I add, is without a doubt the best coffee I've had in Tokyo. Craig Have you tried Starbucks? david What is this "starbucks" you speak of? Craig It's this really neat place that, I think, revolutionizes the coffee experience. Check it out: rich, full-bodied (indeed, almost burnt) brews served a la carte in a spacious, smoke-free, mildly funky environment. And their logo is this totally mesmerising mermaid that is both obscene and reassuring. They even sell killer music right at the register -- and mints! I expect to see big things from this company. david |
No props to David James Cady for the Pizza Hat tip-off? Dude, that's cold. Colder than 31 flavors of ice cream.
